At Rio Tinto’s Kestrel mine in central Qld, the first 20psi design-rated Micon HB (high bond) ventilation seals were constructed by Wilson Mining Services (WMS).
These innovative seals developed in conjunction with Micon USA involve glued masonry blocks and a thinner PUR/gravel core thickness compared to the standard Micon 550 seal. This reduces materials requirements and cost whilst retaining the important features of convergence and water resistance.
The initial HB seals were built using crews formed from both NSW and Qld WMS operators and staff to meet the mine’s planned longwall start-up schedule. The next site to adopt Micon HB seals is Yancoal’s Moolarben mine near Mudgee, NSW.
WMS continues to set the standard in developing, sourcing and providing new and innovative products and services to the Australasian coal mining industry.
